Research into “Living Income” amongst tea and coffee smallholders in Malawi and Kenya to better understand the gap between Living Income benchmarks and current income and identify strategies to reduce the gap. The work involved extensive participatory research with tea growers to understand their definition of a living income and how their current circumstance compared to this. It also featured a participatory market mapping exercise in which a variety of stakeholders mapped the tea value chain, the enabling environment and required business inputs and services to help identify and prioritise initiatives to reduce the gap between current and living income levels.
